Mental health affects individuals, families, and entire communities, yet many people still struggle in silence. PMI brings people together to replace silence with conversation, isolation with connection, and hopelessness with opportunity.
Positive Minds Initiative was created from a simple but powerful belief: positive change begins when people feel heard, supported, and empowered.
Mental health affects individuals, families, and entire communities, yet many people still struggle in silence. PMI brings people together to replace silence with conversation, isolation with connection, and hopelessness with opportunity.
Our two annual community events provide inclusive spaces for education, encouragement, creativity, and practical support. We work with volunteers, professionals, local organizations, and community members to make mental well-being a shared priority.

Founder, Positive Minds InitiativePositive Minds Initiative was founded by Joy Okafor, a pharmacist, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, public-health professional, clinical leader, author, researcher, and devoted mother.
Joy's passion for mental health awareness grew from her own lived experience. Following the breakdown of her marriage, she experienced depression, low self-esteem, and the challenges of rebuilding her life as a single mother.
During the early years of her pharmacy career in the United Kingdom, she also experienced workplace bullying — a difficult period that tested her confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging.
Finding her voice was not immediate or easy. Through courage, determination, personal growth, and support, Joy began to rediscover her confidence and rebuild her life. Her journey taught her that difficult experiences do not have to define a person's future. With encouragement, knowledge, community, and access to appropriate support, people can rediscover their purpose and move forward with hope.
These experiences inspired Joy to establish Positive Minds Initiative. She wanted to create the kind of welcoming and inclusive community that many people need — a place where individuals can speak openly, feel heard without judgement, learn about mental well-being, and be empowered to recognise their own strength.
“Your difficult chapter is not the end of your story. You have a voice, you have value, and you do not have to walk alone.”
Joy is also the author of Before Burnout and Bridging Hearts. Through her writing, she encourages meaningful conversations about well-being, relationships, resilience, and the human experiences that connect us.
Joy's commitment to research is also deeply personal. Her mother developed dementia in her seventies after spending many years working extremely hard and caring for others. Watching her mother gradually lose parts of herself was a heartbreaking experience that profoundly affected Joy and her family.
That experience strengthened Joy's determination to improve the way mental health and cognitive well-being are understood and supported in later life. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, where her research focuses on the management of mental health among older adults. Through this work, she hopes to contribute to better prevention, earlier recognition, more compassionate care, and stronger support for older people and their families.
Joy brings significant healthcare, leadership, education, research, and public-health experience to PMI. She holds a Master of Public Health, a Master's degree in Pharmacy Practice, a Master's degree in Advanced Clinical Practice, and postgraduate qualifications in clinical pharmacy and independent prescribing. Her career has included work in community pharmacy, general practice, urgent care, digital healthcare, university education, clinical leadership, and national healthcare guidance.
Her personal journey and professional career have strengthened her understanding of health inequalities, patient engagement, prevention, education, and the importance of making mental health support accessible to every part of the community.
As the founder of PMI, Joy's vision is to bring people of all ages, races, cultures, and backgrounds together through two major community events each year. These events will promote mental health awareness, challenge stigma, encourage honest conversations, celebrate resilience, and give people practical tools to build healthier and more empowered lives.
